A NEW ‘game-changing’ wireless communication solution has been launched in Europe as retailers face increasing levels of shop theft.
Quail Digital’s new Pro12 Retail Wireless Headsets System arrives at a time when retailers particularly in countries like Germany, France, and Spain, are grappling with rising incidents of shoplifting and associated violence.
Retailers in Europe are facing a growing challenge, with shop theft continuing to rise in 2025. According to the European Retail Crime Survey by the European Retailers Association (ERA), retail crime in the region is projected to cost the industry €50 billion annually.
In Germany, the German Retail Association (HDE) reports a significant uptick in shoplifting incidents, with a 20% increase in the past year alone.
Similarly, in France, the French Federation of Commerce and Distribution (FCD) highlights a worrying trend, with incidents of theft at supermarkets and hypermarkets seeing a 16% rise in 2025.
In Spain, the Spanish Confederation of Retailers (CEC) reports a 17% increase in retail theft over the last year, with significant rises in both shoplifting and organised retail crime in major cities like Madrid and Barcelona. As in other European countries, shoplifters are becoming more aggressive, with 60% of retailers in Spain reporting incidents involving violence or threats.
A growing number of retailers (68%) report that shoplifters are becoming more aggressive and violent compared to previous years, putting both employees and customers at greater risk. Many retailers in cities like Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Marseille have been forced to take additional security measures, with some large chains even reducing their store hours or closing stores in areas with high theft rates. In fact, around 25% of retailers across Europe are reporting store closures linked to theft-related issues.
In response to these alarming trends, more than 80% of European retailers are planning to increase their investment in loss prevention technologies and strategies for 2025, with a significant focus on improving communication and security infrastructure.
Against this backdrop, the Pro12 Retail Headset system is designed to ‘strengthen in-store response capabilities, support better coordination, ensure quicker responses to shopfloor incidents, and enhance protection for staff and assets,’ according to Quail Digital.
Tom Downes, CEO of Quail Digital, explains that the Pro12 Retail Headsets enable ‘instant, clear communication across shop floors, stock rooms, and checkout areas’.
Mr Downes said: “The system’s integrated speech recognition features help staff respond quickly to customer inquiries and product questions, while also providing immediate team support when security concerns arise.
“The headsets employ advanced speech recognition technology for hands-free communication, allowing team members to interact across multiple departments - including sales, warehouse, checkout, and management - with ease.”
Founded in 1995, Quail Digital notes that the Pro12 Retail Headsets can be easily integrated into existing store infrastructure, including alarm systems, kiosks, call buttons, store AI, and telephony, ensuring that alerts and key messages are delivered to the appropriate team members without delay.
Downes continued: “For theft prevention and security, the Pro12 Retail Headsets feature a ‘red button’ alert - a regular communication override feature, which delivers urgent messages across all headsets store-wide instantly.
“With advanced speech recognition, users can quickly switch between groups, request assistance, improve operational efficiency, enhance staff wellbeing, and elevate the customer experience - even during high-pressure situations.”
The system is scalable, from single stores to nationwide retail chains, providing a ‘long-term, reliable communication platform for businesses of all sizes aiming to reduce losses, bolster security, and protect their staff’.
“Retailers across Europe are facing one of the most challenging periods in recent memory, with escalating theft, labor shortages, and rising customer demands,” added Downes.
“Whether for safety, customer service or operational efficiency, stores need clear and immediate communication – especially in today’s challenging environment. Retailers in Europe are dealing with rising theft, labour shortages, and higher customer expectations – the Pro12 system is the solution to all those concerns.”
